Springtime in Valparaiso, Indiana, is usually a little chilly, but if you enjoy the crisp sunny outdoors, there are plenty of places to take advantage of the lower temperatures. However, if you prefer the cozy indoors, there are museums, breweries, and live performances to see. Whichever you choose, there are plenty of things to do in Valparaiso, Indiana, in the Spring.

Gabis Arboretum

If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors and take in the fresh Spring air, look no further than Gabis Arboretum. It’s a nature preserve with 300 acres of beautiful landscapes to explore and boasts miles of hiking trails, gardens, wetlands, and a restored prairie. It also offers musical and educational events, so you can check their calendar to see if any additional events are happening while you’re there.

Gaboris Arboretum has other amenities to enjoy, including numerous species of wildlife. There are over 80 species of birds you can look for, as well as various mammals, amphibians, and butterflies. If you’re coming in May, you can take a ride on the Railway Garden, which is a model train that takes you on a journey through some of America’s history.

Chicago Street Theatre

The Chicago Street Theatre is an excellent place to visit if you’re interested in seeing one of the many theatrical productions it puts on each season. The theatre has been open for over 65 seasons and has produced more than 300 shows since it opened its doors. Some of its more recent performances include And Then There Were None, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play, The World’s Worst Fairy Godmother, and Tammy: A Coming of Age Story About a Girl Who Is Part T-Rex.

It took residence in its newest theatre in 1997, where it now offers an intimate setting of 125 seats and two front-row couches. During its 2011—2012 season, they began performing various Shakespeare plays in the Central Park Plaza. In addition, they’ve done plays, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, and Romeo and Juliet, to name a few. Rogers Lakewood Park

Another outside location to enjoy some fresh air is Rogers Lakewood Park, with 122 acres to explore. If you’re looking to host a company event, it has five shelters available to rent, with plenty of amenities for everyone to enjoy, such as hiking trails, bike trails, fishing, and a disk golf course.

It has other amenities as well. For example, Rogers Lakewood Park also has a boat ramp available for boats that use trolling motors. On a sunny day, you can even rent rowboats, paddleboats, and fishing poles and soak in some sun while enjoying the activities on the water. If weather permits, they also have areas for sledding near the Derby Downs Building.

Anderson’s Winery

If you’re looking for a fun day out to enjoy some leisurely glasses of wine, consider stopping by Anderson’s Winery. Whether you’re looking to host a work event or a family gathering, or you’d like to attend a wine tasting, Anderson’s Winery’s got you covered. They’ve got a wide variety of whites and reds that come directly from their vineyard, as well as snacks to nibble on, such as paninis, flatbreads, and cheese plates. On the weekends, they also provide live music, so you can sway to the rhythm as you discover new flavors during your wine tasting.

Porter County Museum

Founded in 1916, the Porter County Museum began on a smaller scale when the Porter County Historical Society decided to create a space to share the county’s history and culture with interested parties. Today, the museum has expanded to downtown Valparaiso and showcases Porter County’s history by informing visitors about its past, present, and future. In addition, people have donated items, including photographs, letters, furniture, and other possessions, to the museum to provide a more personal experience that shows visitors the life and personal experiences of Porter County’s past residents.

Four Fathers Brewing

Nestled in Valparaiso, Four Fathers Brewing is ideal if you’re looking to taste some of the local craft beers of the area. What began as a hobby of homebrewing in 2009 turned into a local business open to the public in 2014. The brewery’s name came from the owners’ love of the four main ingredients in beer: malt, yeast water, and hops. While they make their regular beers year-round, they also produce a rotating list of handcrafted beers. In addition, they have seasonal beers, test batches, one-off brews, and more.

Chocolate Walk

In May, Valparaiso has an annual Chocolate Festival, and people who purchase tickets are provided with tasty chocolate treats from participating businesses in the community. During the walk, you can visit some of Downtown Valparaiso’s shops and restaurants. As you walk, you can stop by the participating shops to receive your chocolate samples. Many of the local restaurants also offer lunch specials during the day of the event.

Zao Island

Zao Island is a family-friendly place to visit, with plenty of exciting things to do for the whole family. They’ve got go-karting, with a 1,100-foot long track, a miniature golf course that USA Today named one of the most unique miniature golf courses in the country, and a jungle-themed laser tag arena. Other attractions include batting cages, a game room, a giant slide, and an alligator exhibit. Zao Island also has an event venue that guests can use for weddings or business-related events.
