Read on to learn how you can spend this weekend in Valpo.

Explore The Indiana Dunes State Park and National Park

One of the best ways to relax is to reconnect with nature and get some exercise, especially if you’re in an office all day during the week. The Indiana Dunes National Park sits along 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Your little ones can build sandcastles along the shore while you relax in the sun’s warmth and work on your tan.

The Park has 15,000 acres for guests to explore and will consistently offer a fresh experience with each visit. There are over 50 miles, so you can hike the rolling landscape and learn about Diana of the Dunes. Challenge yourself on some of the steep dunes, or take it easy and enjoy the wildflowers that bloom along Little Calumet River.

Cyclists can enjoy the challenging terrain on the Calumet and Porter Brickyard Bike Trails which are splashed with color and nature’s beauty, particularly during late summer. In contrast, Anglers enjoy a relaxed fishing experience on the Little Calumet River.

Do you love a challenging experience? Try the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk fishing piers. You may be able to catch largemouth bass, trout, salmon, or dogfish.

To enjoy the peaceful nature sounds while sleeping, consider camping overnight. The Dunewood Campground offers 66 campsites, four of which are wheelchair accessible.

Lake Michigan influences bird species’ migration patterns, making the dunes prime for birding. Although you’re likely to catch native species such as the piping plover, solitary sandpiper, and killdeer any time of day, the best times are at sunrise and sunset. Pack your binoculars and gear to make the most of the experience.

Other activities you can enjoy at the Park include:

  • Swimming
  • Horseback riding
  • Paddling

Plan your visit and enjoy the weekend at the Indiana Dunes National Park.

Enjoy Your Favorite Caffeine at Uptown Café Valpo

Few things are as good for the soul as a warm drink and a talk with an old friend. Uptown Café Valpo, locally owned and operated by critically acclaimed comedian, Shannon Rogers, has a reputation for being welcoming. This environmentally conscious locale serves Fair Trade and organic coffees and teas. This café is a community-focused coffee house that proudly supports the local art community by rotating art pieces from different artists in the neighborhood.

If you need your caffeine fix, we suggest the Cinnamon roll coffee. It tastes like the liquid version of the yummy treat, only with a little dose of caffeine. Or, for a fun treat, grab a bubble tea for $5. Uptown Café has several options to pair with your drink. For breakfast, grab the biscuits and gravy. The warm house-made biscuits are topped with perfectly seasoned spicy sausage gravy.

For lunch, we suggest the Voodoo Salad. It begins with a bed of romaine lettuce topped with tomato, feta, avocado, tortilla strips, jerk sauce, and a sesame ginger vinaigrette.

Uptown Café Valpo is on 1400 East Lincolnway. For updated hours, check their Facebook page or call  219-299-2742 for more information.
