Tech Tips - iPhone 3G - Is it for real?

Unless you have been taking a sabbatical for the past 3 months, you have heard about the new iPhone 3G.  You have probably seen a few of the early adopters walking around holding their shiny new iPhones, like Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune, for those around them that don’t have the cool new gadget.  The real question is whether or not this is another cool gadget or a serious communication device that can be leveraged in the enterprise.  Apple hopes that the latter is true and has done a commendable job incorporating features into the new iPhone 3G that position it to be adopted by business small and large.

  • A significant feature is the ability for the iPhone 3G to integrate with Microsoft Exchange Server for corporate messaging, calendars and contacts, pushed in near real-time to the device via Microsoft’s Push technology and ActiveSync.
  • Also new is the included GPS receiver that allows the iPhone 3G to know exactly where it is, and to use this information for interesting applications like finding nearby gas stations, banks and coffee shops.
  • Another great offering is the new App Store where any developer that is certified with the iPhone Software Developer Kit can create custom applications for the iPhone 3G.  Companies like Oracle, eBay, Loopt and more have already created applications for the iPhone 3G, some of which are free.
  • The “3G” means that the iPhone 3G can communicate with the internet at 2.4 times the speed of the previous iPhone.  The speed is approaching that of a broadband internet connection at your home.
  • It is one of the best mobile browsing devices available with the Safari browser, finger gesture navigation and the AT&T 3G high speed network.
  • It is an iPod with a beautiful 3.5” wide screen display.

The Purple Guys have seen a strong demand and interest for setting the iPhone 3G up in our client networks and the feedback has been positive.  We were early adopters as well because three of our employees bought the device and sync it with our Exchange Server.  Bottom line is that the iPhone 3G is a great device with some compelling Enterprise features… as long as you can find them in stock.  Your best bet is to go to an AT&T mobile store and purchase the iPhone 3G and contract and you will typically get it in about 2 weeks.
